N//Dissolve//
Below are my completed series of 10 typefaces, all interpreting the word dissolve in different representations. Overall I am very happy with my work, although I obviously know that with more time, I would have been able to execute some of the designs a little better.
I ended up choosing the letter N for my collection, because within my very hyperactive thought path, I kept thinking of dissolve as directly linked to salt, which then led me to sodium, whose symbol on the periodic table is Na. Which actually isn't SO illogical, it's just quite sad that I was thinking so much about salt.
This was an interpretation of the definition of Dissolve
to disappear of fade away.
In a few of my designs, I have tried to experiment and play with the use of line and it's thickness, which I feel uses the word successfully, but maybe a little more subtly. I do wish that with this design I would have developed the thin line a little better, because it looks a little bit scruffy.
Definition-
to make a solution of
With this design, I simply used an adhesive and salt, to create variation within my ideas, and also to try something a little more abstract as a material, instead of just pen and ink.
I think this one works because of the design being on the black background, which adds to the sense that the salt is dissolving into the black.
Definition-
to melt or liquefy
This is one of my favourite designs, because I feel like this is one of the more developed and well adapted designs. I took a simple typeface and played around with it until I got this candle like shape, as I wanted to display the look of used and melted wax. The pen marks don't work quite as well as the pencil on the design sheet, but I still feel like the effect id recognisable to a viewer and is an effective interpretation. It also adds a contrast to my other designs which are less detailed.
Definition-
to disappear or fade away
Again I've used this definition because there were so many design possibilties for it. I think this is another typeface which has worked well, because the simple font doesn't distract from the design within it. I also liked playing with the line thickness again, but this time in a different way, which I do think is visually interesting.
Definition
to disappear of fade away
This is one of the designs that I feel could use more development and improvement, although I did like the idea I had in mind for it. The thickness of the line is again something I liked experimenting with, I just think that the composition and the line's thickness could have been better executed. With both this and the first image, I used a lower case N because I wanted to add more variation, and I also in the design ideas stage thought that this style looked better than if it had been in upper case.
Definition-
To disappear of fade away
Another of these! This time I wanted to work with just the black and white card to create a different style of the letter. The idea was that the white is fading into the black background, which is where the N has been cut down on each side, as if it has already begun to disappear and fade. I like the simplicity of this, and the strong contrast.
Definition-
to lose force, strength or intensity
I wanted to try and create a letter where the definition wasn't the most obvious of the ones I had looked at. I feel like this is a more obscure design. The concept behind this one was the idea of losing force, which in my initial ideas led me to magnetic force, which then in turn led me to the idea of bar magnets losing their force, which I have shown by having the bar magnets separating from each other at an angle. I think this is one of my favourite designs because although it isn't immediately obvious, it still looks quite interesting because of the use of black and white and the different composition to the other designs.
Definition-
legal term (to dissolve a marriage etc)
This is another letter which I feel is quite obscure, but I also feel like the design has been very successful. I created a stencil of a Times Roman design font, which I know is often used on legal documents, and then used ink to bleed out from the stencil. The few white pieces that are visible contribute to the idea that the letter is being dissolved into the ink, and I like that although the ink has created quite a random effect, the typeface is still quite obviously a formal one.
Definition-
to fade or disappear
This is another of my favourites because I think it fulfils the brief in a subtle manner. The shadow lines keep the font legible, but the fact that the rest of the lines that define it have disappeared help to create the idea that it has been dissolved into the background. I only wish that I could have executed this one more neatly, because if I nitpick, I can see small flaws that detract from the overall appearance.
Definition-
To fade or disappear
This is another one that I feel has been successful. With this one, I felt that a more unusual font worked quite well, whilst the composition also complements the style, because it is unlike the rest of the designs.
The block colour also makes the image a stronger statement, which I think again helped to add variation to my collection of letters.
Overall, I feel like I have completed the brief successfully, and I'm happy that my outcomes were able to explore less obvious meanings for the word dissolve. I really thought that I would struggle with this, but I was surprised by how easily I got into the designing and creating process.
There are obviously a few that would, if I had more time to work on them look more professionally executed, but I also feel like part of the type faces being hand rendered is the fact that there will be minor faults, and they add to the charm of it all.
And now all that's left is for them to be judged...
