Software Workshop - Session 4

Booklet printing and InDesign techniques.

When creating a new booklet, you should tick facing pages.
Binding a book and the content will dictate the printing of your book.

Saddle stitch binding
Either stitched or a long arm stapler is used to bind the book.
The total number of pages will have to be a multiple of 4.

Perfect bound - Single sheets of paper which are either ring bound or glued to a hard edge. Pages would have to be in multiples of 2.

A consideration for home printers is that you will need to accommodate for bleed and print marks.
Commercially, printers use SRA sizes that allow for these printer marks, which are slightly larger than the A format sizes and can then be trimmed after printing.

Saddle Stitch Document

This is a reader spread of a saddle stitch document. And allows you to view it how it would be once it fully bound.
A printer spread is how the book will look once printed out, before it is bound.
InDesign calculates the printers spread for you once you send it to print, but to do it manually you can create a mock up which allows you to see the printed resolution physically, but this is only useful for books with a small number of pages.

Printer spreads for books with a large amount of pages can be deciphered with the use of 2 columns.
Label one as right, and the other as left.
You then start numbering the pages between the columns.
The first page is always the right column. You then zig zag with the page numbers between the 2 columns.

L         /           R
8         /           1
2         /           7
---------------------
6         /           3
4         /           5

To check if the printer spread is correct is by counting the page numbers of the spread. If they add up to one more than the number of actual pages in the book, that means it will print correctly.

The master page on InDesign is used to display content that is relevant to the master page on every page that is based on the master page, for example, a magazine with different sections can be divided up by using the master pages. It is effectively used for consistency in publications.

So the right hand master page's use of the word content, has been echoed on pages 4, 6 and 8 of the document.
Any content on the master page is automatically locked, to unlock it you press Cmmd, Shift and then click on a specific frame. This will then allow you to add content.

To create a new master page -

Printing booklets on InDesign -

Post script file - all the information is turned into a post script language that can then be sent to the printers to be reconfigured.
Post script fonts, Open Type, True Type

Adobe Distiller can turn a post script file back into a pdf. format file by dragging the ps. into the white area.
