ISTD Brief: Concept Crit Work

Ideas for 78 RPM - MP3

Choose more than 2 decades, actually spanning the history of the Manchester music scene from 1950-1990?
Create both something for the environment and a printed publication to accompany it - based on Manchester's music so it should include Manchester in it.
Typography similar to the style used to promote the music in the different decades and genres.
Would be centered/distributed around the Northern Quarter, which is seen as the cultural quarter of the city, a lot of places in the area relate to the music scene.
Audience would primarily be music enthusiasts, particularly Northern based adults both male and female who have or feel a connection with the Manchester music scene. Also includes design students and younger music fans.

I am intending to research into the music scene in Manchester from the 1950's - 1990's. I want to explore the songs and lyrics of Manchester because I think it has one of the most influential and most widely recognised and celebrated music scenes in England. The songs that came out of this period are also incredibly meaningful and have a distinct edge to them that will be challenging and fun to explore typographically.
My main idea for this brief is to create a publication and an environmental piece that uses large scale typography in the Northern Quarter of Manchester. The publication would come in the form of an LP cover with a record in it, and a book exploring the lyrics and providing a history of the songs and the music scene. There would also be a web page connecting to this which would serve as a 'history of' and a collection of the best records.
